Where to go on a self-drive, adventure-laden vacation?

A few years ago my boyfriend and I went on a self-drive vacation to Costa Rica. We really liked being somewhat independent, yet having hotels and different tours booked for us. We want to do something similar in November, and preferably have whitewater rafting included. Where should we go?

Please help planning vacation to Australia?

If you’ve traveled through Australia with a tour company, please give some pros/cons. We’re looking for both short and extended options, *not* budget, not too sport/adventure-oriented, not too busy. Our hope is to both explore the cities/sites, and rest, and all in 2-3 weeks. Any suggestions?
We are really hoping to hear about some tour companies or travel agents that work in SF Bay Area.
